On Anniversary of Roe, California Dems 'Celebrate' Abortion

(AgapePress) - Only in California. On the 31st anniversary of the landmark abortion decision in Roe v. Wade -- a ruling that opened the door to the legal murder of more than 43 million unborn babies thus far -- Democratic legislators in the Golden State pushed through their own celebratory resolution urging Americans to "celebrate" abortion.

An estimated 300,000 abortions are performed in California each year. On Thursday -- the same day that pro-lifers rallied in Sacramento to mourn those deaths -- the Democrat-controlled State Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution that calls upon Congress and President Bush to "uphold the intent and substance of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision [Roe v. Wade]," and to "participate in the national celebration 'The March for Women's Live,'" an event schedule for April 25. In the 49-25 vote, every Democrat on the Assembly floor supported Assembly Joint Resolution 57, as did two Republicans.

Randy Thomasson
Randy Thomasson, executive director of the Campaign for California Families, calls the action "shocking."

"We were all in the womb once," he says. "[E]ach one of us enjoyed nine months of pre-born living in a special compartment that God designed to protect and nurture us. [But] it's shocking that ... [our] Democrat legislators are celebrating the horrible procedure of abortion that destroys the most basic of rights -- the sacred right to life."

During heated debate leading up to vote, several Republican lawmakers spoke against the "celebration" of abortion. One of those was Dennis Mountjoy, who reminded the Assembly that millions of American babies have died because of the legalization of abortion.

"Are we that calloused that we don't care what's going on here?" he asked. "Forty-three million. That is an absolute genocide and we ought not be celebrating it. We ought to be crying tears for the unborn Americans."

Another defender of the unborn, Assemblyman Jay La Suer, said when legislators are extolling the "freedom of choice," they need to remember that the baby being aborted has no choice.

"I'm pretty happy that my mother didn't believe in abortion," La Suer stated. "Those of you that want to celebrate this wouldn't even be able to celebrate it if your mothers believed in it -- because you might not even be here."

Republican Ray Haynes of Temecula said that instead of celebrating abortion, the Assembly should be convening hearings about why women are dying as the result of abortions. Lawmakers, he said, should be having "real serious discussions" about what actually occurs in doctors' offices to find out if what is happening to women in abortion clinics "is good for all of us."

"Those discussions should take place," Haynes noted, "but they don't."
