Buchanan Critical of Pols' Handling of Illegal Immigration Problem

(AgapePress) - A former presidential candidate fears the United States will soon become two nations, with two languages and two cultures, because politicians on both sides of the aisle are not willing to stem the tide of massive illegal immigration from Mexico.

Pat Buchanan is the author of The Death of the West: How Dying Populations and Immigrant Invasions Imperil Our Country and Civilization. In the book, published in 2001, Buchanan contends that the U.S. now harbors a "nation within a nation." The MSNBC conservative commentator says thanks to out-of-control illegal immigration, states like California and Texas could eventually break off from the rest of the country.

"I think these parts of our country are going to be de facto parts of Mexico even though they're under the jurisdiction of the United States," Buchanan says. "And I think where you have two cultures [and] two languages ... you wind up with two countries. There's a real possibility our country could come apart the way the Balkans did just after the end of the Cold War."

He predicts such a break-up will happen because politicians are not listening to the majority of Americans, who want to curb illegal immigration. "The American people agree with us on this," he says. "They would like the borders controlled, and they would like kids taught American history and American heroes and the English language. But the politicians of both [major political] parties will not do it."

The conservative author and commentator contends that millions of illegal immigrants enter the U.S. with no intention of assimilating into the American culture and becoming Americans. He says they consider themselves to be "loyal, patriotic Mexicans," as does the Mexican government.

"They are creating their own radio stations, magazines, and television stations, all Hispanic," he notes. "They want to retain their separate culture and identity as Mexicans -- and they're concentrating in the American Southwest," the result being that native-born Americans of European descent are now a minority in California -- "and they'll be a minority probably next year in Texas," he adds.

Buchanan made his comments recently on the American Family Radio program Today's Issues.
