(AgapePress) - A leading pro-family advocate says the American family is getting little help from the federal government these days, thanks to Washington's many anti-family policies.According to Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, United States Census Bureau figures have shown a steady decline of the family as divorces and cohabitation increase. But he notes that one government official, when shown this trend on a CSPAN program, revealed Washington's attitude toward the family. "Her answer, and I quote, is 'So what?'" he says.
"That has been the attitude of official Washington for families," Dobson says. "It has not been recognized that families are the key to stability in the culture." And this attitude, he contends, is the main reason the government has enacted so many policies and programs that have had negative effects on the family.
The pro-family ministry founder cites as examples the no-fault divorce, the marriage tax penalty, and non-parental notification laws. "All these policies that have come along have weakened the family," he says. "Almost none of them have strengthened the family, and that's one of the reasons the family is in such difficulty today."
Dobson believes many of the problems confronting America today can be traced to the government's implementation of programs and practices that are disruptive and damaging to the family. The chairman and former president of Focus on the Family says things will not get better in America until Washington recognizes that the family is the bedrock of the U.S. society and culture.
