(AgapePress) - A Mississippi pro-life activist says she's thrilled that one of the last two remaining abortion clinics in her state is about to close. The move comes after Alabama suspended the medical license of a an abortionist at the clinic. The group Pro-Life Mississippi reports Dr. Malacy Malvin deHenre recently had his license to practice medicine suspended by the state of Alabama. Dr. deHenre, the primary abortionist at New Woman Medical Center on Briarwood Drive in Jackson, was the focus of an investigation brought about by the November 2003 death of a woman ten hours after having an abortion performed by deHenre.
Pat Cartrette, director of Pro-Life Mississippi, says Friday, August 13, will be the last day that abortions will be performed at the clinic Briarwood Drive. She says she cannot express strongly enough how important the clinic's closing is.
"It's thrilling because access is the key. If there aren't abortion clinics, people can't have abortions," Cartrette explains, adding that abortion clinics cannot stand up under scrutiny. "There are too many injuries, too many violations for them to stand up."
The pro-life activist says such scrutiny is what has brought about New Woman's shutdown. "That's one of the things that's happened here," she says. "The abortionist has already lost his license in Alabama. He may lose it in Mississippi. So with all of that coming out into the light, the clinic's about to close."
Caratrette says in 16 years of operation, this clinic has been responsible for the deaths of more than 34,000 Mississippi babies. A thanksgiving and prayer service at the site is being planned. Pro-Life Mississippi had been calling for an investigation of deHenre and New Woman Medical Center since February 2003.
The only remaining licensed abortion mill in Mississippi is the Jackson Women's Health Organization.
