Activist Predicts Pro-Homosexual Marriage Slogan Could Alienate Many Canadians

by Chad Groening
March 4, 2005

(AgapePress) - A Canadian pro-family activists says this weekend's Liberal Party Convention in Ottawa will highlight the anti-family agenda that group will push this Spring, including changing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to allow same-sex "marriage."

On the agenda in the Canadian capital will be resolutions supporting the legalization of both marijuana and prostitution. The pro-pot resolution asserts that "legalizing marijuana would be a serious blow to drug dealers and organized crime financially." And earlier this week, Liberal Senator Mac Harb told the Toronto Sun newspaper that legalized prostitution would be "a great idea" that would promote Canadian tourism, just as Amsterdam's red-light district has done in the Netherlands.

But Brian Rushfeldt of the Canada Family Action Coalition (CFAC) says the main event at the convention will still be advancing the Liberal Party's effort to legalize homosexual marriage. Even the younger element of the Party is getting involved in the debate, he says -- and may be pushing away potential supporters.

"The Young Liberals of Canada, which is the youth wing of the Liberal Party, launched a campaign, and their slogan is: 'It's the Charter, Stupid.'" Rushfeldt explains. He says that, in essence, the slogan is offensive to about 70 percent of Canadian citizens who do not see homosexual marriage as a Charter issue.

"So clearly the Young Liberals are now saying that all of the 70 percent of us are stupid, and that they have the right answers," he says. "That, I think, is going to offend a number of Canadians deeply when the word gets out."

According to the CFAC spokesman, the Young Liberals launched their campaign last Friday because of the upcoming convention in Ottawa, where these various laws and policies will be discussed from the liberal perspective.

"The Young Liberals think that somehow offending 60 or 70 percent of Canadians is going to be good for that policy convention and good for the fact that they're trying to ensure that homosexual marriage gets pushed through," Rushfeldt states. "I think the reaction is going to be very strong from most Canadians."

According to the Winnipeg Sun, even Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin refused to wear a button emblazoned with the slogan. That report quotes the prime minister, who supports same-sex marriage, as telling a Young Liberal offering him the button: "I've got to tell you, I really like the first three words. I have a little trouble with the last one."

Rushfeldt says he expects the second reading of the homosexual marriage amendment could be voted on in Parliament as early as this month.
