(AgapePress) - A pro-family activist says a new poll on judicial nominees reveals just exactly where the majority of the nation stands on the issue. Meanwhile, a leading pro-life advocate says her group is not endorsing President Bush's Supreme Court nominee.American Values director Gary Bauer teamed with Dr. Don Wildmon of the American Family Association to poll the people of the nation on what kind of judicial nominee they wanted for the U.S. Supreme Court. It found that the more conservative a nominee, the more support he will have. Bauer puts it this way:
| Gary Bauer |
"In other words, Americans want a nominee who would be likely to defend marriage as being just between a man and woman," he says, adding that "they want a nominee on the court who is going to vote to keep 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance and would allow the Ten Commandments to be displayed."Bauer says based on the poll, the White House strategy of hiding the conservative nature of the Judge John G. Roberts is the wrong strategy -- and in contrast to the poll results. He contends the "stealth strategy" that some in the White House are using in trying to hide the fact that Judge Roberts is a conservative is "exactly the wrong way to go."
Speaking of contrasts, the American Life League is providing one to the unwavering Republican support for John Roberts. Even though his positions are still in question, many pro-family groups have been quick to say that President Bush made an excellent choice.
But ALL president Judie Brown says that confuses her. Brown says her group cannot endorse Roberts because she has no idea what his positions are.
"We don't support anybody. We don't support him either," Brown explains. "All we've been doing and asking people to do is to pray that fair hearings are held, and that this man's true colors are able to come out."
According to Brown, there is a lot of prejudice being exhibited. "There's a lot of people saying things about him, negative and positive," she observes, "and frankly, I've read everything that he's said, and I'm very confused about where he stands. I have no idea."
Brown does note that when asked about legalized abortion, Roberts is quoted as saying that he believes Roe v. Wade is the "established law" of the land.
