Activist Leery of China's Courtship of Russia

(AgapePress) - A human-rights activist and leading critic of the Communist Chinese regime says he is concerned that the world might be witnessing the development of a new alliance between China and Russia, similar to the Sino-Soviet pact of five decades ago. Steve Mosher is president of the Virginia-based Population Research Institute. Mosher says the U.S. should be concerned about this summer's eight-day joint military exercises that involved 10,000 Russian and Chinese troops. Those activities, he says, should convince America of the need to pull the Russians back toward the West.
Mosher admits he is concerned about China's effort to bolster its ties with Moscow. "I think Russia, now, could go either way," he offers. "Russia could be drawn in, as it seems to be right now, into China's orbit. There could be a new Russian-Chinese alliance, sort of like the Sino-Soviet alliance back in the 1950s; only this time China would be the dominant partner."
And Mosher is convinced the Chinese have been buying up Russian weapons for one purpose.
"China is spending literally billions and billions of dollars each year, buying Russian-made weapons and Russian-made weapons technology," he says. "Those weapons were all designed to attack U.S. assets. They were all designed with the specific purpose of a first strike against the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Army."
According to the Population Research Institute spokesman, those arms sales have contributed to keeping the Russian military afloat -- but there is more, he says.
"The other part of it, of course, is that China is just devouring Russian raw materials," he explains. "Lumber and various mineral resources are heading south to China at a great rate." The solution? "We need to pull Russia west and [get her to] join us rather than look east and join China."
Mosher also recommends that the U.S. "firm up" its alliance with Japan. It is vital to America, he says, that Japan have a first-rate military.
