Groups Say Golden Globes Presented Hollywood's Hyped Version of Homosexuality

by Jenni Parker
January 18, 2006

(AgapePress) - - A prominent pro-family organization and a leading "ex-gay" ministry are highlighting the highly hyped and politicized atmosphere of Monday night's Golden Globes award ceremony, at which the pro-homosexual film Brokeback Mountain was a clear victor.

Winning four Golden Globe Awards, the film about homosexual sheepherders who hide their affair for decades held the spotlight for much of the evening, while other homosexual- and transgender-themed films also received accolades.

The Golden Globes honored Brokeback Mountain with the best drama, best director, best song and best screenplay awards. Meanwhile, Desperate Housewives co-star Felicity Huffman won best actress honors for her role as a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual in the gender-bending road trip movie Transamerica. And Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor for his portrayal of homosexual writer Truman Capote, author of Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, in the film Capote.

Concerned Women for America (CWA), the nation's largest public policy women's organization, is calling attention to the way these and several other winners at this year's Golden Globes are playing into a massive public relations campaign that is even now seeking to pave the way for the spread of liberal ideology, including the further mainstreaming and public acceptance of homosexuality. The pro-family organization contends that, except for the Johnny Cash bio-pic Walk the Line and the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, the evening's Golden Globe winners were all characterized by decidedly leftist viewpoints.

Examples include Mary Louise Parker, whose character sells pot to pay her bills in the film Weeds; and George Clooney, who won best supporting actor for his role in the film Syriana, which some conservative critics have described as politically correct and "subliminally" anti-American. Dr. Janice Crouse, senior fellow at Concerned Women for America's Beverly LaHaye Institute, feels the recent awards show suggests that Leftist Hollywood is even more concerned with pushing its liberal agenda than it is with the "bottom line" of the entertainment business.

"Once again," Crouse observes, "the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit." She goes on to note that "none of the three [Golden Globe Award-winning] movies -- Capote, Transamerica, or Brokeback Mountain, is a box office hit." In fact, the CWA spokeswoman says, "Brokeback Mountain has barely topped $25 million in ticket sales. While it has recouped all the production costs, it is doubtful that receipts have covered the massive PR costs."

Exodus International president Alan Chambers, a former homosexual, says the Golden Globe Awards was deliberately pushing the envelope with the nomination of controversial new films that center around the issues of homosexuality and transsexuality. But ultimately, he insists, Hollywood's one-sided portrayal of homosexual life is damaging and hurtful.

Chambers says while some of the themes in the homosexual themed films that dominated the Golden Globe Awards explore the unhappiness, pain, promiscuity of the homosexual lifestyle, their overarching premise sends the wrong message to Americans about culture and sexuality.

"Hundreds of thousands of men and women have rejected the notion that life must be dominated by our unwanted same-sex attractions and have found a way out of homosexuality through Jesus Christ," he asserts."

Exodus International is the largest network of former homosexuals in the world. "Our desire," Chambers notes, "is to empower others with more information and offer the same hope for change that has brought life and freedom to us."
