Family Advocate Pleased to See 'Man of Integrity' as Canada's New PM

by Chad Groening
January 25, 2006

(AgapePress) - - A Canadian pro-family activist says while he is very pleased that the Conservatives have finally returned to power after 13 years of Liberal Party rule, he is disappointed that so many of his fellow countrymen voted for the outgoing party -- which he views as "corrupt."

Stephen Harper told thousands of supporters in Calgary that Canadians voted for change -- and that his party will take the lead in delivering that change. But the Conservatives did not win enough seats to form a majority government. As Brian Rushfeldt explains, that will mean a coalition must be struck with the Left.

"One hundred and twenty-four Conservatives cannot pass a piece of legislation without joining forces either with the block or the ND," says the co-founder and executive director of the Canada Family Action Coalition. "That concerns me -- that they're going to have to form a coalition with one of those other parties that don't have much in common with us."

Rushfeldt says it is disappointing that so many Canadians still support the Liberals, a group that has been hit by several scandals during the tenure of outgoing Prime Minister Paul Martin. "After all of the things the Liberal Party has done and the criminal investigations that are going on, we still have 103 of them sitting in Parliament," he notes. "Actually, it disappoints me -- but it shocks me that we've got Canadians who support that kind of behavior."

That is one reason Rushfeldt is glad to see Harper, whom he knows personally, move into the role of prime minister. "We've got a new man of integrity at the helm here -- and Stephen Harper is a man of integrity," he says.

Rushfeldt promises that the Canada Family Action Coalition will hit the ground running, urging the new government to deliver the changes Harper has promised. On his first day on the campaign trail in November, Harper promised he would hold a free vote on changing the definition of marriage. Prime Minister Paul Martin put the Liberal government's final stamp of approval on homosexual "marriage" in July 2005 when he signed legislation known as C-38.
