Latin American Lawmaker Helps Bring the Bible to Fellow Ecuadorians

(AgapePress) - - An Ecuadorian lawmaker is determined to take the Word of God to his fellow legislators, so that he can see his Latin American country transformed by the gospel even at the highest levels of government.

Jose Manuel Criollo represents an indigenous people group in Ecuador's legislature. He is also a Christian who is currently working with the Illinois-based Bible League in an effort to distribute scripture and disciple new believers throughout Ecuador and other nations in the region. The Bible League's initiative, called "Defy the Darkness," is an effort to raise money for scripture distribution and to encourage Christians to help spread the light and truth of scripture throughout Latin America.

Criollo says although everyone needs God's Word, he feels he is in a strategic position to deliver it to government officials. "Heaven is for everybody," he observes, "and that's why it's very important that we also share the gospel and the scriptures with the Congress and with the leaders and authorities of our country, so that they ... might know Christ and that He is the Son of God."

The Ecuadorian official says his peers in the government need to know that Jesus is "the Savior of the world and the One that can forgive us our sins," so that they also "will be able to reach salvation." But in addition to his outreach to his fellow lawmakers, Criollo has been trained by the Bible League to distribute scripture and to evangelize his area, where Bibles are, for many people, very difficult to access.

"Many of the people who live in the indigenous zone do not have work, do not have employment, and they live only because they have a small piece of land that they can cultivate," Criollo explains. "We would like to share with them the Word of God, to share with them the Bible," he says.

Even Christians in Ecuador often have little hope of getting their hands on a Bible, the legislative representative points out. But since the goal of the "Defy the Darkness" campaign is to get believers to share the scriptures, he notes, even more copies are needed.

"Those who are Christians already have the will to go and share with others," Criollo asserts. "The urgency for the scriptures is because once the people share the Word of God, they also need to share the Bible," he says. "They can't just go and buy these."

The Bible League partners with local churches in more than 50 countries around the world, teaching indigenous Christians how to draw seekers into Bible studies. According to the organization's website, the League does not consider its mission completed until new converts are enfolded into the fellowship of a church.

Last year, the Bible League saw 468,338 new Christians become church members as a result of its ministry.
