(OneNewsNow.com) - - Black pro-life leaders who gathered on Capitol Hill yesterday were challenged to persevere in the fight to eliminate abortion. The National Black Pro-Life Union hosted an event on Thursday at the Capitol building featuring a bipartisan group of lawmakers and pro-life leaders in the black community. Union president Day Gardner told those leaders they not must not sit and dwell on past accomplishments, but rather focus on the challenges ahead.
"Abortion kills more black people -- as most of you in this room already know -- than other deaths combined," she shared. "Abortion is a silent killer because we don't talk about it as a people." According to a press release from the Union, 15 million -- or roughly one-third -- of the estimated 44 million babies killed by abortion since 1973 were black.
"The good news," continued Gardner, "is that the pro-life side is winning. America is becoming more and more pro-life everyday."
The Union spokeswoman was optimistic and upbeat. "Eliminating abortion may seem to some a rather daunting task; to some it may seem impossible," she conceded. "But I believe in God -- and with Him nothing is impossible. For this task we shall need to put God first, and then we must have our best leaders follow."
The event was headlined by prominent pro-life speakers such as Dr. Johnny Hunter, Alveda King, and Los Angeles pastor Jesse Lee Peterson. Also in attendance were Democratic Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Republican Congressman Chris Smith of New Jersey.
