(OneNewsNow.com) - - The American Family Association (AFA) is circulating a petition that the group says is intended to counter a petition from MoveOn.org, which urges the government to permanently renew tax dollar funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and its subsidiary, National Public Radio.AFA, a conservative pro-family organization, says hundreds of millions of tax dollars are spent each year on PBS and NPR for coverage of a liberal perspective on the news and culture.
A petition from MoveOn.org containing at least 370,000 names has already been circulating recently, in response to President Bush's budget proposal slashing PBS's funding by 25 percent. The petition asks for permanent funding at current levels and protection from any future changes.
AFA objects to the tax funding, saying PBS should have to raise its own voluntary public support, like any other non-profit broadcaster -- and AFA has initiated an alternate petition in hopes of getting equal support to send to Congress for opposing the funding.
