Roe Begins to Crumble with High Court Ruling, Pro-Life Activist Declares

CHICAGO, (christiansunite.com) -- "This is a good day for unborn babies and for the future of America," said Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Chicago-based Pro- Life Action League.

"The Supreme Court's ruling upholding the Federal Ban on Partial Birth Abortion is significant because it signals a new sensitivity on the part of the Court to the plight of the unborn child in a late term abortion."

In 2000 the Supreme Court struck down the Nebraska ban on the late term procedure, also known as D & X abortion, in Stenberg v. Carhart. The U. S. Congress subsequently passed a federal ban on the procedure, which was signed by President George W. Bush on November 5, 2003. Planned Parenthood challenged the federal law, claiming that the ban does not protect women's lives.

"The reality is that abortion is harmful to both women and babies, and partial birth abortion particularly so," said Scheidler. "The baby always dies and the mother suffers the loss of her child, and she may also face physical complications brought on by the abortion. The partial birth abortion technique is dangerous to the woman, requiring a breech delivery and trapping the baby in the birth canal while its brains are extracted."

Scheidler also noted, "Abortion is not a civilized solution to the problems that arise from an unplanned pregnancy. It is not a reasonable option for the medical community to present to women. Certainly in this age of advanced medical technology we can do better than to kill our unborn children and tell women it is their best choice."

"I am heartened by the fact that Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion," said Scheidler. "The whole pro-life movement has been energized by this 5-4 victory. We may now have our Supreme Court majority."
