ABC Drama Labels Abstinence Educators Murderous Liars, Compares American Youth to Parasites

SIOUX FALLS, South Dakota, (christiansunite.com) -- "ABC has no respect for the facts or our children's integrity," says Leslee Unruh, National Abstinence Clearinghouse President. "The latest Boston Legal script goes too far when it accuses abstinence educators of homicide and deceit."

An Oct. 9 episode features the fictional civil suit of a 15- year-old against her high school. Abby Holt blames the school's abstinence education policy for her HIV contraction.

Alan Shore, the girl's legal counsel, lauds the efficacy of condoms. He names them "arguably, the single most important invention of the past 2,000 years". Shore then criticizes abstinence education literature for comparing condom use to Russian roulette.

Shore concludes his argument by stating, "We should be in criminal court this very moment trying this obscenely duplicitous school for conspiracy to commit murder."

Shore also tells the courtroom that teaching children how to use condoms does not encourage them to have sex.

The girl's attorney strips youth of any sexual self- control. "They're simply going to do it!" he states. "We all do it. Birds do it, bees do it, educated fleas do it."

No condom-based teen pregnancy program has ever been shown to prevent teen pregnancy or STDs. (Valerie Riches, "Sex Education or Indoctrination?" Youth and Family Concern, 2004)

"This line illustrates these writers' lack of respect for our children," says Unruh. "When a program compares human beings to fleas it downplays our innate integrity."

The plaintiff's attorney glorifies condoms throughout his argument, suggesting that the health of the world depends on them. "One time unprotected sex can kill you," he says. "A condom can save you."

A lubricant found on some condoms, non-oxynol-9 has actually been found to increase the likelihood of contracting AIDS (GAO-05-399, March 31, 2005)

Shore completes his attack, saying, "All schools that teach abstinence have chosen to lie."

"It's unfortunate that ABC refuses to recognize the truth behind abstinence education. Saving the lives and hearts of youth doesn't make abstinence educators liars and murderers. It makes them heroes."

The ABC episode aired less than two weeks after a CBS drama portrayed young abstinence club members as hypocritical assassins.
