WASHINGTON, (christiansunite.com) -- The following may be attributed to Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, director of the Washington, DC based Christian Defense Coalition:Simply stated the Nelson compromise is not pro-life and will allow for abortions to be paid for with public money.
It appears that Senator Nelson has sold out his pro- life principles and America's children for millions in subsidies to help Nebraska pay its Medicare and Medicaid costs.
The Christian Defense Coalition, Operation Rescue and other major pro-life organizations plead with Senator Nelson to reconsider his position and embrace human rights and social justice for America's children.
Several concerns pro-life organizations have with the Nelson compromise:
His language does not prevent public money from paying for abortions in the federally-subsidized health care exchanges.
The state opt-out still will require each state's tax dollars to pay for elective abortions. This opt-out does not prevent one state's tax dollars from paying for abortions in other states.
For the first time, a federally funded and managed health care plan will cover elective abortions.
Let it be clear, Senator Ben Nelson can no longer claim to be champion for America's unborn children or pro-life hero. In the end, he sold America's children for a promised pot of gold.
The pro-life community will work with greater passion to see that not one penny of public money is spent to pay for abortions in this healthcare legislation.
