Government Neglect Blamed for Modern-Day Eugenics in Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON, (christiansunite.com) -- Leaders of the National Black Pro-Life Coalition are outraged and horrified that women could be treated by Kermit Gosnell for over a decade without government oversight and accountability in Pennsylvania. A recent grand jury investigation shows that state health care officials did not act on reports of botched abortions, involuntary sterilizations and deplorable facilities run by Gosnell for low-income women, mostly minorities.

Gosnell, an African-American, was recently arrested for killing a woman in a botched abortion and for seven counts of murder related to the infanticide deaths of babies, allegedly purposefully birthing then killing them with medical scissors. Gosnell was allowed to continue performing late-term abortions even after being denied admittance to the National Abortion Federation (NAF). NAF rendered their decision after a site visit showed deplorable conditions at his facility yet the NAF did not report the conditions.

"It is unimaginable in the 21st century that the state of Pennsylvania allowed women to have their lives and health put at risk," said Catherine Davis, legislative director for the Network of Politically Active Christians. "The abortion and eugenics industry are not satisfied with killing women and babies, they are now focusing on shutting down pregnancy resource centers that serve as safe havens and alternatives to abortuaries run by the likes of Gosnell and others," Davis added.

Eugenics, defined as "a social philosophy which claims that human hereditary traits can be improved through social intervention" also incorporated the use of sterilization as a form of birth control. Pennsylvania, the first state to enact a coercive eugenics board in 1907, continues to allow this philosophy by its lack of government oversight and accountability of abortion clinics and practitioners.

"Philadelphia and the National Abortion Federation allowed black and Latino women to be put at risk for more than a decade," said Ryan Bomberger, of the Radiance Foundation. "African-American women are and always have been the target of the abortion and eugenics proponents. As this modern day 'back alley' abortionist demonstrated the notion that abortions are safe is a lie," said Bomberger.

"We call on Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell and Congressman Chaka Fattah to hold the health workers and National Abortion Federation accountable for their failure to warn and take action," said Walter Hoye of Issues 4 Life Foundation. "The women harmed by Gosnell should be able to see justice in action," he said.
